How we use information
- To create accounts and pet profiles and to run the feed, marketplace, bookings, messages, events, contests, adoption drives, and notifications.
- To take booking payments through Stripe and to apply the booking refund rules.
- To sell and manage Green Tick, show the badge when it should show, and review business verification.
- To keep the service secure, prevent fraud, and enforce our terms and community guidelines.
- To reply when you contact us.
- To send service messages. Commercial email is covered under CASL below.
- To understand, in aggregate, how the service is used so we can fix it.
Legal bases under GDPR and UK GDPR
When the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on: contract (running the account and bookings you ask for); legitimate interests (securing the service, preventing fraud, and understanding basic usage); consent (optional location access, and commercial messages where consent is the right basis); and legal obligation (tax, accounting, and lawful requests).
You can withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing that already happened.
PIPEDA
We identify the purpose of collection at or before the time we collect personal information, we limit collection to what a reasonable person would consider appropriate, and we keep it only as long as needed for those purposes. You can ask for access and for a correction. You can challenge our compliance by writing to us, and you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
CCPA/CPRA
We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you are a California resident, you can ask to know, correct, or delete personal information, and you can appeal a denial by replying to our decision email. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Categories we may hold, depending on how you use PetPool, include identifiers, customer records, commercial information (bookings and subscriptions), internet or device activity, approximate geolocation, photos you upload, and professional or license information for business verification.
Children
PetPool is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we will delete it.
Commercial messages (CASL)
We send commercial electronic messages only with the consent CASL requires, or under an exception the law allows. Each commercial message will identify PetPool Technologies, include our mailing address, and include a way to unsubscribe. You can also unsubscribe by emailing us.
Who we share information with
We share personal information with the people and companies needed to run PetPool.
- Other users, when you post, message, book, review, or show a profile.
- Stripe, to process booking payments and refunds.
- Apple and Google, when you buy Green Tick as an in-app purchase. Their store terms apply to that purchase.
- The company that hosts the PetPool application, and the host of this website (Render), to the extent they process data to provide hosting.
- Email delivery, so we can reply to you.
- Authorities, when the law requires it, or to protect people, animals, or the service.
How long we keep information
We keep account, pet, and message information while your account is open. Verification photos are kept while the business Green Tick is active and for a short period afterward so we can answer a dispute about the check.
Booking and payment records may be kept for up to six years where tax, accounting, or dispute rules require it. We delete or de-identify other information when the purpose is finished.
Your choices and rights
You can access, correct, or delete account information. Deletion steps are on the account deletion page. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to a copy of your information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to lodge a complaint.
In Canada, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. In the EU or UK, you can contact your local supervisory authority. We ask that you email us first so we can try to resolve the issue.
International transfers
We are in Canada. If you use PetPool from another country, your information will be processed in Canada and may be processed in the country where a provider such as Stripe, Apple, Google, or our host operates. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR requires a transfer tool, we use an appropriate safeguard such as standard contractual clauses.
Security
We use TLS for data in transit and limit access to personal information to what the service needs. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure.
